The Great Northern Diver is the largest of the divers and few birds can match the exquisite chequered patterning of its summer plumage and its elegant striped collar. It nests only in the far north of Britain, and is unusual even there, as the main breeding grounds are Iceland, Greenland and Arctic North America.
In midwinter they are rare, but the rest of the year they can be seen swimming in groups off rocky shores in the west, and are widespread in estuaries and broad sandy coastal bays. The diver has a most distinctive wailing, echoing call, and the sound has often been used in films when a scene calls for a lonely, eerie mood. Heard on a Scottish loch in mist it is unmistakable. The divers, sometimes called ‘loons’, are also the subject of many N. American folk tales.
