Great Crested Grebes were once shot for their feathers and used to be a rare sight in Britain, but since being protected in the 20th century the population has recovered, to the extent that on inland stretch of water, particularly in the south, is complete without a resident pair. They have a delightful courtship displaying which much reciprocal head bobbing takes place. The striped young are often carried on the parent's backs.
