Bird Information

The Lesser Spotted Woodpecker is the smallest and least common of the three woodpeckers there are resident in Britain. The male is distinguished from the female from his bright red crown. It often tends to nest and feed higher up and is quieter in its tapping. It is usually located by its call and its drumming and it flies with an undulating flight in the open. When feeding it creeps along branches and flutters from branch to branch.
You can often see them in open woods, copses, parkland, gardens and orchards, they tend to frequent the tops of trees, searching for larvae, spiders and wood-boring insects on smaller branches.
